Colombia Luzmila Gonzalez

129,00 kr

Luzmila is a first-generation coffee farmer who has been cultivating coffee since 2008 alongside her husband, Eider, in Gaitania, Tolima—the third-largest coffee-producing region in Colombia, located in the country's west-central highlands.

This coffee is of the Caturra variety and grown exclusively at her El Oasis farm, situated at an altitude of 1,750 meters. Luzmila adheres to strict ripeness criteria during harvest, ensuring only the finest cherries are selected. After picking, the coffee cherries undergo a process of floating and hand-sorting to remove any defects.

"When we first tasted Luzmila’s coffee, we really appreciated that it had some really fun and unique characteristics that we didn't really recognize from this region. What sets Luzmila’s coffee apart is its clean, crisp acidity and bright, zesty lemon and orange flavours that really stood out on the cupping table!

In addition to these distinctive notes, Luzmila’s coffee also carries the classic traits of Colombian coffee: perfect balance, high sweetness, and a soft, lingering aftertaste. We're really excited to share this coffee with you!"

Coffee production in Colombia has a reputation for producing mild, well-balanced coffee beans. Colombia's average annual coffee production of 11.5 million bags is the third total highest in the world, after Brazil and Vietnam, though highest in terms of the arabica bean.

In 2007, the European Union granted Colombian coffee a protected designation of origin status and a few years later in 2011, UNESCO declared the "Coffee Cultural Landscape" of Colombia, a World Heritage site.

Colombia has just about the perfect geography for growing coffee, a sensitive crop which needs exactly the right conditions to thrive. The richness of flavour for which Colombian coffee is celebrated is mainly down to an excellent climate, perfect soil and the exact right amount of rainfall.

Caturra is a mutation of the Bourbon variety and is well-known for its compact growth, making it easier to cultivate in small spaces. Discovered in Brazil in the early 20th century, Caturra is characterized by its relatively high yield and good cup quality, though it is susceptible to diseases like coffee leaf rust.

The variety quickly spread across Latin America, where its shorter stature made it popular among smallholder farmers. Today, Caturra is widely grown in countries like Colombia, Nicaragua, and Costa Rica. It shares Bourbon's sweet, complex flavor profile but is generally more productive, making it a favorite for both quality-focused farmers and specialty coffee enthusiasts.

Luz Mila González leads a simple life, working tirelessly alongside her three children on their family farm, which is nestled deep within the mountains. The coffee plots are meticulously maintained, as are the parchment storage, the depulper, and the marquesina dryer, which is notably larger than their house—a clear indication of the family's commitment to high-quality coffee processing at Finca El Oasis.

Gaitania is well-known among Colombians as the birthplace of the FARC. It is an extremely remote area, isolated by several hours of travel from the nearest city. The region remains pristine, with a stunning and unique landscape marked by steep, jagged mountain peaks under the looming presence of Nevado del Huila, the perpetually snow-capped volcano that blesses Gaitania with fertile, volcanic soil.

The area's isolation has historically made it a stronghold for the FARC and other insurgent or drug trafficking groups, often turning it into a battleground between opposing forces, with the local population caught in the crossfire. However, the recent rise of speciality coffee from the region is bringing much-needed economic growth, improving living standards, and offering a viable alternative to joining insurgent or criminal organizations.
