Indonesia Mandheling

115,00 kr

Mandheling coffee, an Arabica variety grown in the highlands of North Sumatra, Indonesia, is named after the Mandailing ethnic group. Known for its full-bodied richness, this coffee delivers earthy flavours of chocolate, spices, and dark fruit, making it a favourite among coffee lovers. The traditional wet-hulling method used in processing further contributes to its distinctive flavour. We purchase this coffee directly from the Ketiara Cooperative in Takengon, Aech.

"It was important for us to find a partner in Indonesia that shares similar values and that works hard to make a positive impact on the local community. We found that in Ms. Rahmah, the chairwoman and CEO of Ketiara. She is relentless in improving not only the quality of the coffee but also the quality of life for a whole generation of young farmers.

Rahmah has achieved remarkable progress in the traditionally male-dominated Gayonese society. Both she and Ketiara embody a professionalism and dedication to innovation that we deeply admire and connect with. Their tireless efforts to engage young farmers, especially women, are both inspiring and crucial to the community’s growth. Through our impact trade initiative, we are proud to support these efforts by setting aside a premium to fund community programs."

Farming Practicies

Ketiara is made up of 1014 smallhold farmers in the Gayo Highlands of Central Aceh – the northernmost province of Sumatra. More than 70% of the farmers are women. All coffee from the cooperative is certified Organic and grown by farmers from 19 villages in Aceh Tengah and Bener Meriah. There they work the rich volcanic land without the use of chemicals to promote healthy soil and long-lasting forests and clean water sources.

The local members are well-informed about Sumatra prices through cell phones, which are crucial for daily price updates in the volatile internal market. Despite the recent low commodity market price, producers are aware that their local market can fetch three times the price. Ms. Rahmah motivates producer members through fair compensation, far exceeding the internal market price, as well as several community programs. These programs include seedling donations, workshops on organic fertilizer production, equipment maintenance, farm improvement, and even university scholarships. As a result, producer members who sell to Ketiara remain highly committed to the cooperative, as their premium coffee quality commands higher prices than offered by multinational companies.
