Coffee from Uganda

Uganda is one of the world’s largest Robusta coffee producers, with coffee cultivation dating back centuries. Unlike many other African coffee-growing countries, where Arabica dominates, Uganda’s indigenous climate is particularly well-suited for high-quality Robusta, which grows naturally in the country’s lowlands. Today, Uganda is a major global supplier of Robusta, primarily used in espresso blends and instant coffee production.

While Arabica is also grown in the higher-altitude regions of Mount Elgon and the Rwenzori Mountains, Robusta remains Uganda’s backbone, with major growing areas around the shores of Lake Victoria and in the Central and Western regions. Ugandan Robusta is valued for its full body, low acidity, and deep, chocolatey, and nutty flavors, often with a smooth, slightly earthy aftertaste.

Efforts to improve post-harvest processing, including washed and dry-processed Robusta, have brought Ugandan coffee increased recognition in the specialty coffee sector. The country’s high-quality Robusta offers a more refined alternative to lower-grade commercial Robusta found elsewhere, making it increasingly attractive to speciality roasters.
